What are Stem Cells?

Adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a population of cells capable of self-renewal, that is, the ability to “clon” themselves and differentiate into different cell lines under special culture conditions. They are characterized by their ability to divide constantly for long periods of time without significant changes in their phenotype or general properties.

MSCS can be found in practically all body tissues, where they form niches or reserves for tissue repair in case of disease and for renewing the cellular repertoire. Currently, MSCs are obtained from different tissues for in vitro expansion, such as: adipose tissue, bone marrow, placenta, dental pulp, endometrium, due to their abundance and technical ease for their extraction.
